I fix computers for some of my friends. They are usually quite happy if I just remove all crapware, schedule scans of any sort for a time when they are not using the machine, set things to not start up that they don't want starting up, and defrag the hdd. For my own computer I've always owned the operating system disks but in the future I think I'll get an imaging software package and image a computer before it's ever online for a second even. It's possible to completely build a computer without it ever being online. It takes some preplanning. I build a thumb drive with all the software install files, install the operating system, get it registered via telephone and have it all good to go with no contact with the internet. I did this with trading machines that were operating behind a whitelisting firewall. After they were built they would never get connected to anything not on the whitelist. They never, ever, ever, had any problems. They never slowed down, they never crashed, they worked perfectly all day every day.

go to bottom of page to find link to portable version. when it shows you a list of all programs, uninstall anything you absolutely don't need. if you have a question re a program either GOOG it or post it here - i hate crapware the way trump hates rosie

Right click on "My Computer" and go to Properties (or in Control Panel select System Properties).
Select the Hardware tab, and choose device manager.
Are there any errors or is everything fine?

Anyhow, pay a college student $50 to fix it for you....
If you are serious about trading, generally it is a good idea at least once a year to put the computer back to its original state, because all computers slow down as time goes by. Back the data up, and fire up the reinstall DVD...

Traders really should have their trading machines "dedicated to trading" and nothing else.
Have a separate machine for web surfing and other. It will eventually become schmutzed-up, but at least you won't have your trading apps getting schmutzed as well.
Half of the VM's (Virtual Machines) I rent out are "internet" or "porn" machines that traders remote-desktop into and do all kinds of crazy stuff - torrent, stream porn, get viruses, etc.
It allows a trader to have a dedicated machine for trading and have a no-strings-attached internet box that draws little to no system resources - but without the need to own two machines.
Or that... One way or another, traders should isolate their trading functions from everything else they do on the computer.
If you don't mind my asking, how does the cost of leasing one of your VMs compare to the cost of a 2nd computer?

Seriously what..?? lol. Biggest myth in trading is that you need a super computer to do it. I trade 1 or 2 markets a few times a day so I just need something that works with a bit of screen real estate (couple 21-inch monitors).
Regarding the once-a-year thing, I have been doing so with this machine.
