Please, I welcome any posts where people would like to share examples of where pushing the envelope on racism leads us. But lets stay away from obvious instances of racism - we all would like to stomp that out. I'd like to see if there is some common ground we can find on examples that, I believe, are taking us over the edge. If you believe different, lets discuss why.

I'm also trying to maintain civility as best as possible in this thread, knowing we will disagree. I hope you do, too. Spike just wanted to post examples where blatant racism was evident as proof that white people are bad, despite the fact that racism exists in all races to some extent. We don't need that - we have a bunch of other threads we can use to pummel each other with examples of it.

That is what gets a knee jerk reaction because when friends (Black and dressed to play hoops so not looking all spiffy) waiting for me outside my brownstone said a cop rolled by and told them to move along please I was like No way that cannot be true. Then it happened a few more times and I realzied my doubt was insulting to their experience as though they would lie and no way it could happen.

Once is more than enough but it happens with enough frequency to be bad and when you have 10 bad cops in a 1000 and the other 990 look the other way, then it presents a problem for all the good ones as well.

I believe a high high % of cops are good. But a significant amount are bad in racial situations or have anger and authority issues and the other cops know it and do nothing. So if they want to say "HEY WE ARE NOT ALL LIKE THAT!" but stand by while one murders someone and would have gotten away with it if there was no video...

Then let the accusations sting the good ones a little to speak up and assume responsibility to help rid the few bad apples that are ruining it for the rest of them. I often hear the cries why don't the Blacks speak up about the Black on Black crimes and Black criminals creating negative stereotypes.

Agreed.....same for the cops. You dont want a few bad ones making you all look bad then stop hiding behind the union and "following orders" and do something from within so you control the narrative.

My first sentence was I wish there was a way to see if this is true. Since there is no way to do that we must assume people are telling the truth. I don't like assuming. If black people across the board are in fact telling the truth, and that every encounter they have with police the outcome is determined by race alone then we have a problem so gigantic it's impossible to imagine a positive resolution without in fact firing every cop in the country.
If 90 percent of cops are not allowing race to determine these things, but all black people are having the same negative experiences, then that means they are continually running into the same bad 10 percent. That seems impossible, which leads me to believe all of these shared stories are not completely truthful. Race and race alone is not the determining factor in all of these cases, something else is occurring, at least in some instances.
However this is worth looking into. Cops are assigned specific areas to patrol. Perhaps these cops, for a variety of reasons, get burned out in some areas. How often are assignments rotated? Are they rotated at all on a regular basis? Would that be a good or bad idea to do so? There are good arguments either way.
Many things to be given a serious look, but right now we must demand the wheels of justice move a hell of alot faster when a cop/citizen encounter goes south.

But you believe the police have an option to engage? In some cases, that is their job. I mean, no one is holding a gun to their head (no pun intended) but they are quite obliged to engage.

Right, I know that they are suppose to. But everyone doesn't do as they are suppose to do.

There has to be something with it. Let me dig around and see what I can find. Perhaps the FBI keeps something like this. First, though, we have to define what "engaging" is.

You're right, we'd have to define that before any serious inquiry could begin.

I recall watching a documentary a bit ago that stated they weren't being kept. There are a lot of stats that aren't kept. And all departments aren't required to keep the same stats.

Even if there were, would a racist cop keep accurate stats of how many Whites he let go, and how many Blacks he didn't? Of course not.

The only way to amass such stats is for continuous monitoring of every officer ... via constantly on body cam, for example. It doesn't sound easy.

GPS tagged vehicles would help ... I think many already have this.

Maybe it can be done, even retroactively, automatically by using data from each officer's plate reader (those that have them), crossed with registration data on the drivers race. It could only be an estimate at best, imo.
 
There is no stat on engaging if a cop stops someone in the street and harasses them a bit and then lets them go. No report is filed or notes taken. Fore example...where was the report of the following:

Amber Ruffin "run-ins" with police where she was doing absolutely nothing but got treated like a criminal....you think a record of these engagements are recorded haha



Stop asking for stats or monitoring because a cop being racist, aggressive or inappropriate is not going to rush back to the precinct and write it all down unless someone happen to have a camera.

We could put these stories up for days and most people still not believe it unless it happens to them or we can "prove" it because cops are never wrong.
