Even assuming that you are right. Guess what? It doesn't matter. No one will notice and the essential point of plastics pollution becoming a huge problem is valid nevertheless.
Every time an organization makes an outrageous claim about a problem not backed by facts or science - it leads to a situation where the world does not address the issue. Because all the detractors will point to the absurd claims and ensure that no action is taken.
When organizations provide proper research backed by science and data which is not fabricated it is far more likely that a convincing argument will be made to address the issue with wide-spread backing.
Every time absurd claims are put forward - whether it is for climate change or for plastics in the ocean - the individuals making the assertions are undermining their own causes they claim to support.
I support green energy, pollution control, and meaningful environmentalism. I am opposed to unsafe fracking. However I find that climate change fear-mongering with the associated absurd fraudulent claims from alarmists undermine all the initiatives I support by creating broad dissent and diverting money to address non-existent "climate change" instead of spending funds on issues backed by obvious reality.

“Europe has lost half of its Alpine glacial ice since the 1850s, and if climate change is not reined in, two-thirds of European ski resorts will be likely to close by 2100,” Peter Fox, the editor of Powder magazine, wrote in an op-ed in February 2014.
“The same could happen in the United States, where in the Northeast, more than half of the 103 ski resorts may no longer be viable in 30 years because of warmer winters,” Fox wrote.
