Don't think there aren't hoards of people out there hunting for work and that everyone is living off the dole. Whats more even people who bothered to educate themselves can't find work.
Everybody should be WalMart greeters and grocery baggers?
People have every intention of being self reliant, its just that capitalism has a limited threshold for employing even well meaning populations. Its musical chairs, its the NFL somebody's got to come in last theres only so much disposable income.
