The guy shouldn't of resigned, who and how and with who ever he has sex with doesn't make a difference in what kind of politician he is. The only thing he might of done is apologize for preaching and telling others how to live their lives. The republicans should practice one of the main core beliefs of conservatism and that is mind your own damn business. We have enough big problems without worrying about who is screwing who.
 
Telling other people how to live their lives is the influence of the Christian right, which has become a most important of the republican base.

This is why they appear so conflicted when part of them is Libertarian, part of them is just pure business/capitalist, and part of them is a social morality play...

They cater most to the business side, next to the social side, and least to the libertarian side...which is why third party candidates typically pull from the republican side.

The dems are traditionally more of a circus tent that has included many ideologies...

It was never so clear how important the religious right was, or at least how powerful they are when they spurned Romney the Mormon in favor of John McCain the Baptist...
