To push it in a particular direction, squeeze must be applied. With most players doing the exact same thing (i.e. buying breakout to the upside only, average down whenever we get a 20 pt drop, etc.) where everyone coming out happy is not normal.
Re - happy is not normal. Wasn't that the norm for quite a few years & if it was, then why not now? I am not into fundamentals, but I do remember reading that quite a few companies weren't paying dividends, so if that's the case profit has to come from a stock's volatility, is that a correct assumption?
