I don't know the level of sophistication built into the algorithmic trading pgms in use, but if you compare it to that of chess programming and complement that with the distinctive capabilities of 1000+ traders and virtually unlimited trading capital on your own side. It is a significant, perhaps unbeatable advantage for a few players. The bots don't play like human traders, but I'm not sure how to recognize their plays and the influence they have on the plays that humans make.
