if the US govment wants continued financing of the debt, they need to hit the stock market.. otherwise bond yields back up....

the best way to increase demand for your product is to create deflationary pressures....and sustain them during rampant government spending.

When I read statements like this, I just want to shake my head. I do not mean any disrepect here, but volume is much more than an "indicator".

ES, like any auction market, is established on the principles of supply and demand. Pivot levels, support and resistance levels, and other key chart levels represent areas where participants in the past have decided that the price was either too cheap and they had to buy/cover their shorts (support) or that it was too rich and they had to sell/sell short (resistance). Breaking through those levels with adequate levels of participation suggests that those opinions have changed, and that equities in general are being repriced.

If a market "breaks out" to a new high (for the day, for the week, whatever) and there is no buying, price will go back. This is apparent on the charts. Volume has clearly dried up. If there IS buying, price will more likely stay at that new level. If the price hits a new high, and the reaction back to support is on light volume, that suggests that most who bought the new high are not interested in selling. If the pullback is on high volume, that suggests that there is more potential downside, and that those who bought the new high are now holding the bag.

I don't have time to get into all of this now, but suffice to say, the principles of supply and demand apply to all economic enterprises. Futures trading is NOT an exception to the rule.

Good luck to all.

Agreed completely, volume lets you know who is participating at what time and price in the market. It is invaluable tool which i use everyday - i don't know how you can say volume is subjective???

Price can move great distance without much volume. Volume is too subjective and can be twisted to meet someone's wants. I never use volume and if I did, it would just add too much info to what I am doing, I want it simple and I want to walk away from the computer. Volume is an unnecessary consideration in the process. Continue to use volume if you wish. I find that it just lays there. :)

Good trading to all. I will speak with you again soon--:)

How can you make long term decisions without examining the volume. I thought the markets is an auction process, how can you understand that process without knowing which time frame participants are in what price??

I also don't use volume :D

I'll be away the rest of the day, but wanted to take a moment and thank everyone for their contributions. The discussions are very interesting and enlightening. I look forward to more of the same type of productive discourse in the future. :)

I was not able to post this earlier due to children related errands. and I will not be able to sit in my trading room today due to house projects, but I ask this of posters and lurkers:

Can someone, Does anyone know what a measured move for a cup and handle is?

(Spectre2007, you have observed cup and handle before, is there some device for projecting a measured move?)

Does anyone consider this a valid formation (certainly, the handle/bull flag has some legitimacy).
