when price moves there is expectation that it pulls back to a reasonable degree, but at each point as price makes headway and fails to pull back. It fuels a runaway move. And a cascade results where price spikes.

the mental processes behind it are clear. And expectation of profit by countertrend players are negated.

Do you mean that when a clear trend is established the countertrend players are somehow "trapped" in their positions?
