I think shorts are in control when there's like a terrorist attack or something, but 98% of the time, the markets have to go up by design. It's simple as that.

Fair enough, and I completely agree! The hard part is getting the mindset right and fighting instincts that say ''it's too high to long''.
Like you say, as long as the fed are involved (and they alwas will be) we are 100 per cent guaranteed to go up over time. Obviously we might get the odd correction, but that's just opportunity to improve your cost average.
