ES Gaps, Slippage & Leverage

Thanks Comagnum! Is there advance notice of margin increases? I'm trying to evaluate how much cash needs to be in the brokerage account to not get closed out of my positions, as I would prefer to have as much cash as possible in an FDIC account if they'll give me enough time to ACH or wire more in.

I'm pretty sure they won't force liquidate without giving enough notice to post additional margin.

Yes - there was advanced notice with TS - I think it was 2 days before the Brexit.

Hi,

What/when are the largest historical gaps and slippage in the ES? Both for Sunday night openings and during "flash crash" type of situations? I am trying to determine a reasonable amount of leverage that will avoid catastrophe in black swan type events if the market becomes disorderly like May 2010. I can't find data anywhere. Any insights or recollections from traders who have seen some of the faster moving markets would be a huge help. Thank you!

On Sept 17, 2001 when markets resumed, S&Ps opened 60 points lower.

Good chart H123. What i remember about that move was not just the planes [2=] crashing in to the towers. Those enemy pilots did not know much tek analysis. SPY had already gone down a year, + so SEPT was the low for the year[2001], huge vol. Made the 50% low, later[SPY Hindsight $150/+--to $77/+] one year later, SEPT 2002...........................................

Panic selling maybe more common; but i'm looking for that older chart on the surprise rate cut that cause a up spike about lunchtime. Not that i exspect a surprise rate cut, lunchtime today.LOL

Wise word, SailorGood, because they usually close out a over-leverage automatic @ among the worst prices.NOT because they hate you, LOL ; its just the way panic selling or panic buying happens.Options Xpress used to bank sweep in FDIC accounts; just clicked on their website, cant get that link to work@ [3:07 central time/chicago time.....................................] Mainly like the old Interactive Broker ad says , with owner riding a horse,''NEVER choose an ordinary investment vehicle'' LOL-true
