TrueCrypt is open-source and free under GPL. It is by no means worthless. Is Linux worthless? DVDshrink? Backtrack? Aircrack? etc?

I changed to TrueCrypt from Steganos encryption. TrueCrypt is great and has support for OS X and Linux.

It must not be that worthless if kana is saying he needs to dedicate his "awesome" system for about 70 hours. I don't think he can if the password is something like this:

WEP is almost worthless, and yet it stops 90%+ of people out there. I have a chronograph watch and I cracked a 128-bit WEP key (2 days ago) in about 8 minutes with 47k IV's collected. A couple of hours later at a restaurant, I cracked a 64-bit WEP key in about 3 minutes with 17K of IV's collected.

At no time during the dozens of WEP AP's I cracked did I see anyone else cracking the AP I'm working on, or any AP's I can see. I can tell if someone was performing an attack. My point is that WEP is still useful for stopping most people.

I don't know anyone who can crack my TrueCrypt files. Customs agents at the border, probably not. My purpose for encrypting my files is met.

NSA, maybe. If NSA is after my files, I have bigger worries than the privacy of my files.

OK. I'll bite, it's a slow evening and I'm backing up files.

What are we trying to keep secure? Passwords? Data files? If you just want to store data and keep it secure buy a 2 Gigabyte USB drive (pen/thumbdrive). Create a random series of characters using a relatively fancy random number generator, say a linear congruential generator to seed a mersenne twister. Generate a 2 gigabyte one-time pad. Using a simple C# or Visual basic function combine your data on a character by character basis with the one-time pad you created with the random number generator. Run the entire process on a laptop running on its battery inside an oven (not turned on of course for you technicaly challenged folks). That takes care of the TEMPEST problem. Copy the file to another pen drive or CD\DVD. Save the thumb drives in two separate secure locations. Reverse the process to decrypt. Now destroy the laptop's memory and hardrive as the data is obviously worth more than a couple of hundred bucks. Turning the oven on to self-clean will probably do the trick.

If this appears a bit complex to protect your financial data use TrueCrypt or PGP.
 
To have REAL security as opposed to bullshit stupid people use.

here is what you do

You get PGP 6.0.2

You generate 20 high bit keys

you keep encrypting encrypted files 20 times over (or if you are like me more times over)

do this on TEMPEST proof computer, Buy META ALLOYS and create your own cage

or buy a pre made TEMPEST tent or cage

system must be clean of trojans, keyloggers etc

I do additional protection with a Faraday cage.

if you buy pre made, make sure to test it

Good TEMPEST and Faraday combination will not allow your cell phone to work
inside the cage on any angle/spot

I use expensive laptops for this because its easier to carry in and out
and you don't have to use power cables which carries EM risk as well.

This whole rig will cost you about 3 k (not counting laptops)

proper mounting and unmounting with FULL security takes 10 minutes

TRUE SECURITY dictates that you must be vary of physical entrance by NSA/CIA
while you are not at home

I have nothing against NSA (in fact I admire them) and I am not a wanted man
by any power on planet earth

I just like REAL security

as opposed to BULLSHIT by pseudo thinkers on ET

if you don't have money for proper rig or to be a trader

go screw yourself
