I think what you are referring to is also called "ACV" - Accumulated Contract Volume. Many of the software packages (J-Trader, Ninja Trader, Button Trader) let you view the limit order book in real-time.
There is an interesting thread on using it to "scalp" the ER2 here:

It's pretty interesting stuff, though as I pointed out on that thread, I have researched it and backtested some theories and my conclusion is that it can be a useful tool, but you need to use caution, it isn't as easy to interpret as some believe.
