Doesn't this just entirely destroy the whole premise of the article? They argue that whites overestimate how big and strong black men were due to racism, but it turns out, so did the blacks. So there must be another explanation, other than racism.
Racism is not what is going on. Racism is about believing oneself inherently superior and involves some theory of superiority through genes, mark of Cain in the old days or whatever.
A black man appears larger to both blacks and whites just not notably more menacing to blacks. Optical illusion tricking the limbic system into concern over a physically superior foe? We know all about that as traders, familiarity breeds contempt. I'd warrant if you pained both blue and hid the faces you would have a tie.
Are black men stronger? Depends I believe anyway largely on nurture. As most know, anyone who did hard physical labour as a child and then stayed reasonably active is not to be messed around with. My father was a much smaller man than I but he helped his father out in his construction and carpentry business after school every day. I saw him do quite improbable feats of strength my whole life. I watched him at 74 years old unload a truck carrying two bags of cement at a time on his shoulders like they were nothing to the back over a hundred yards away each trip.
Whatever hard labour does to young muscles and I guess the capacity to just dismiss pain that would stop a typical modern day soft living man, it stays through life same with farm work.
In the end, the fight is won in the mind like any match up and if white guys believe they are going to get beaten, they certainly lose.

Even the example they gave was ridiculous. Mike Brown was the size of an NFL lineman and was a thuggish bully. He and his buddy were walking down the middle of the road, challenging anyone to stop them. The media tried to call him the Gentle Giant, until video showed him strong-arm robbing a convenience store.
As a very big man, UUGE, I can assure you that people panic when faced with white old me and a cross face. I've spent my professional life being the calm guy, not because I am the calm guy but because if I get cross, people start looking for the exits. I've seen the animal fear many times.
Michael Brown died because he was a big guy and being black made it worse, the incompetent cop panicked.

No (relative stranger) gives me cheek in person, everyone is careful what the say to me as I am physically very imposing. The last person who did was my US trumper ex-pat neighbor who resorted to waiting at the elevator for me to come into the car park (I walk up the stairs) and then bitching from a safe distance. If I lose my temper or even move fast men shit themselves. Most of the honest conversations I have are with women who don't perceive me as a physical threat.
This little experiment online where I can try saying closer to what I think has been somewhat therapeutic.. however I really would prefer not to need to vent
