Einstein's puzzle: Can you sovle it?

Another sample ...

A manager at my company sent this puzzle out to
a group of about 100 software developers.
You know...the analytical, problem solving,
logical types...day in...day out.

Only 2 replied with the correct answer.
Took them about 30 mins avg to solve it.

So def - maybe your brighter than you think ;-)


IQ numbers are tricky.
The overall number is fairly useless to me.

Which would you rather have?
An IQ of 110, with high analytical,logical,pattern matching scores,
and poor language scores.
Or an IQ of 130 with super high language scores, and average
analytical,logical,pattern matching scores?
As a trader of course :D

or the quick answer

the person who doesnt smoke pall malls , whos not swedish, who doesnt live in a blue house and who doesnt have a cat.

jot down a fact about each animal - the guy whos not those is it :)

I am confused by the question and or the answer that your boss was looking for. But, what do language scores have to do with IQ score? Further, doesn't ones analytical and problem solving skills make up a large part of IQ?
 
I solved it, but I had to make the assumption that the person with the cats and the person with the water that lived next to the person who smoked blends weren't the same. Otherwise, the cat could be in the first or third house, and therefore the fish could be in the first or third house. Did I miss something, or did all of you make this assumption?
 
The original puzzle posted at the top
of this thread was the puzzle the manager sent out.

IQ tests ive seen test things like:
Verbal skills, spatial skills, logical reasoning,
pattern recognition, short term memory,
visual apprehension, classification skills,
computational speed, analogies, relations, etc...

Some are more language/vocabulary weighted than others.

I think its true that analytical/problem solving play
a larger role on most IQ tests than language/vocab.

eventually, you find out that cats and water have to be the same person.

you solved the puzzle with brute force, changing the positions around randomly until you found something that fit (so did aphie with his matrix) , that circumvents the meaning of the puzzle and is akin to cheating. you have been disqualified (tell aphie he is out as well). shame shame on the both of you...


I solved it the correct way ...with the proverbial pen on the back of an envelope (and LOGIC)

the dude, who posted the door things must have the read Schwager book "New Market Wizards" as there is the puzzle originally stated.
