Good question. Part of the skill set of a buy side analyst is to uncover critical factors (major embedded scenarios) and catalysts (informational events). There’s usually at least one tradeable event for most stocks every month or so, and most analysts will cover 50-80 stocks.

I wouldn’t classify those guys as analysts in the traditional sense. What is portrayed on TV is pretty different from what actual analysts and portfolio managers do.

I think you’re wrapping yourself around a game of semantics. Catalysts are informational events, as in, 100% of the time material information is released.
