Uh, the U.S. still has the best institutions, most developed capital markets, and strongest corporate legal infrastructure in the world. We are still the largest economy in the world. Our govt. borrowing is simply offsetting the massive reduction in private borrowing. Without stimulus unemployment would be even higher; if anything, higher than expected job loss indicates a need for more stimulus, not that stimulus caused job loss. The negative effects of Keynesian policy are felt in the long run. Sure, terminal growth rates may decline slightly, interest rates will be a little higher, and our currency will decline. But not to the extremes these nutjobs are talking about.

Probably not. (At least not until The Second Revolution... the one which THROWS ALL THESE BASTARDS OUT!) In 1987* Congress passed a bill and was passed into law... known as "Gramm-Rudman-Hollings"... It MANDATED there NOT be deficit spending.

But the next year when its provisions were to take effect, Congress just chucked it into the trash... apparently was no fun to operate under a balanced budget. (Imagine.. A FEDERAL LAW... they decide they don't want to obey it, so they don't... with no repercussions.)

*If I missed the date, save your ragging. Recalling this from memory (which unfortunately, seems to get more Swiss cheese like all the time.)

And BTW.. Warren Rudman was the kind of principled man America could use as a leader. He resigned his Senate seat citing something to the effect, ""...Federal politics is so slimy and smarmy, it makes me feel unclean... and I can't participate any longer..." (Compare to Bush, Obama, Barney Frank, Nancy Pelosi, et al ...)
