Former Worldcom Chief Executive Bernard Ebbers was handed a 25-year prison term for directing the biggest accounting fraud in corporate history, leaving thousands of investors empty-handed.
CNBC and other news organizations originally reported the sentence as between 30 years and life in prison. However, Ebbersâ attorneys were allowed to speak before the final sentence was handed down and the judge ultimately decided to render a final, 25-year verdict.
Ebbers, who built a small Mississippi-based long distance company into a telecommunications powerhouse, was found guilty on March 15 on all charges â one count of conspiracy, one count of securities fraud and seven counts of false regulatory filings.
