Eating Healthier

Is it better to buy canned tuna packed in oil or in water?

Water-packed is usually preferable because it has fewer calories and retains more omega-3s. Oil-packed chunk tuna absorbs more of the oil than solid white, even if you drain it. On the other hand, the oil that tuna is packed in—often soybean oil—is unsaturated and heart-healthy.

I think that’s a false belief that unsaturated fat is healthy. Olive oil, coconut oil, and butter are the way to go. So soybean oil isn't so good, as I understand it.

I don't tend to "freak out" about any foods, seeing as how I subscribe to the "everything in moderation" philosophy. The one possible exception would be if I were ever diagnosed with some form of cancer, in which case, I would probably endeavor to eliminate absolutely any trace of refined sugar from my diet whatsoever.

That notwithstanding, according to Joel Fuhrman, M.D., the main source of my information on nutrition, not only does oil supply lots of empty calories, it also contains a suspected carcinogen—called 3-MCPD, or monochloropropane—that forms when we heat extracted oil. Moreover, oil gets absorbed efficiently and quickly and converted almost instantly into body fat, with excess body fat increasing the likelihood of cancer.

Of course, it is certainly better to use olive oil than to use butter or margarine. But, in addition to having the potential of taking up most of an individual’s caloric intake, oil significantly lowers his or her intake of nutrients and fiber. Compared with its high caloric content, olive oil contains very few nutrients, other than a small amount of vitamin E and a negligible amount of phytochemical compounds. While it's true that in the past, Mediterranean people regularly ate olive oil, they also worked hard in the fields, walking about nine miles a day, often while guiding a heavy plow.

However, in quickly glancing over all this material, I did not see anywhere where the good doctor suggested a healthier alternative. And given that monochloropropane is merely a suspected carcinogen, I have no concerns about using oil in food preparation to the degree that I do, which is more-or-less sparingly. Especially since I am a thin guy who has now lost any trace of a "beer belly," "baby fat," or "love handles."

Recently I cut way back on my intake of sugar, refined carbohydrates, processed foods, red meat and empty calories, the reason being that I was getting a numb-like tingling feeling in the tips of my fingers, which the information I found on the Internet indicated was a sign of pre-diabetes. (I have absolutely no desire whatsoever to become diabetic!)

An unanticipated side affect was that for the first time since I was nine years old, I haven't so much as a hint of a "potbelly," and in fact, find myself nearly sporting six-pack abs for the first time in my life, despite my now being a senior citizen.

But starting tomorrow, I am taking full control of my diet in that my meals will now be 100% separate from the meals enjoyed by the other members of my household. This means I am going to have to start making snacks that will satisfy me between meals, but that are made with ingredients like dates, almond milk, unsweetened cacao, ceylon cinnamon, etc., rather than with dairy milk and sugar.

This thread will be a convenient spot for me to archive the recipes I find since I can't misplace this website, and google will make it easy for me to search for any particular recipe I might want to return to in the future, even if I accidentally forget about it for awhile. And so, I plan to begin posting recipes tomorrow...

I do find that strange, almost always= tuna in water + oil = priced the same:caution::caution::caution::caution::caution::caution::caution:
I NEVER have bought salmon in oil; wild caught salmon in water is the gold standard.
