On Tuesday, the Alameda County Registrar's Office confirmed that organizers have submitted enough verified signatures to put a recall vote on the ballot this November. The efforts to recall Mayor Sheng Thao began in January and they have been able to gather just over 40,000 signatures.

Retired Judge Brenda Harbin-Forte, who spearheaded the recall, told local media Thao has "blood on her hands" amid rising crime, grand theft auto and instances of people being robbed on the street. "Businesses were not leaving Oakland at this pace before she came into office," Harbin-Forte told the local ABC affiliate.

In what ways is the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo case ending the 40-year-old precedent of "Chevron deference" a good thing?

Here's why it's considered a positive development:

  1. Restoring Judicial Independence: The decision overrules the 1984 Chevron v. Natural Resources Defense Council precedent, which required courts to defer to agency interpretations of ambiguous statutes. By doing so, it restores the judiciary's independent role in interpreting laws, ensuring that judges exercise their own judgement than blindly deferring to administrative agencies.

  2. Clarity and Accountability: Under Chevron deference, agencies often had broad latitude to interpret laws, leading to inconsistent outcomes and sometimes expanding their authority beyond what Congress intended. By rejecting Chevron, the Court emphasizes that courts should independently assess whether an agency's interpretation aligns with statutory authority. This promotes clarity, accountability, and a more predictable legal landscape.

  3. Checks on Executive Power: Chevron deference had given federal agencies considerable influence over policy implementation. The ruling curtails this power, emphasizing that courts should scrutinize agency actions more closely. This rebalancing of authority ensures that agencies operate within their statutory bounds and prevents unchecked expansion of executive power.
In summary, the end of Chevron deference in Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo strengthens judicial oversight, promotes clarity, and reinforces the separation of powers—a positive outcome for the rule of law.

What are the most authoritative studies on spike proteins left by the COVID-19 vaccine?

  1. A study published in Circulation investigated post–COVID-19 mRNA vaccine myocarditis. Researchers found elevated levels of full-length spike protein (33.9 ± 22.4 pg/mL) in the plasma of individuals with post-vaccine myocarditis. This spike protein was unbound by antibodies and not detected in asymptomatic vaccinated control subjects.
  2. Scientists at Scripps Research obtained high-resolution details of the structure of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein from an experimental COVID-19 vaccine. These details align with the robust neutralizing antibody responses observed in preclinical and phase 1 clinical studies.
  3. A study revealed that T lymphocytes, which target the spike protein, persist six months after vaccination and help protect against the delta variant of the virus.
  4. Another study highlighted potential age-related differences in the processing of vaccine-derived spike protein, which may explain the relatively higher frequency of myocarditis in adolescents and young adults. Unbound circulating spike protein could play a role in myocarditis4.
(Remember that research is ongoing, and new findings may emerge.)
