Italo Disco was a huge phenomenon but in the US it was never really that popular. I personally think it is one of the best genres in the 1980s along with Hip House (mix of high tempo hip hop & acid house) and of course Rave (now referred to as Hardcore). [Acid House was mainly a London & Leeds scene but it was very popular in Chicago which is the birthplace of House Music.]

There was a lot of overlap in time for these genres. Italo Disco was about 1982-1991, Hip House was really just one record label DJ International and was mainly from 1987-1989. Rave was probably the most popular that was from 1989-1993. Rave eventually morphed into Jungle, then Drum 'N Bass and then eventually we got Trance.

Italo Disco did have some influence in the US mainly Laura Branigan. Her song Self Control was a remake of the RAF track which was a popular track in France & Italy in 1983-4.

Probably the song that is the anthem of Italo Disco was Ryan Paris' Dolce Vita (1984).

Thanks for your input and experience!

The way i look (hear?) at this, is that up to about 1999 music was produced maily organically, after that- electronically, artifically... and lost its SOUL.

What i crave in music is mostly the soul of it. For some reason i find Latin music to have the most of it. Pure joyful energy. but its just my experience. Italo disco is certainly unique, has its own distinct character and is also joyful.

Arabic/greek/turkish tunes.... for my taste are too uniform, similar to each other...
