Another great track from the early 80s. Double Dutch rope skipping was a phenomenon from the late '70s early 80s mainly in inner city schools in Bronx (I used to live in Queens back then).
McLaren was a pretty amazing producer & artist. He went from producing British punk rock to being one of the pioneers of 1980s synth dance music (mainly Electro Funk). Buffalo Gals & Double Dutch were his best but he also had a great track called Deep In Vogue which Madonna ripped off and made famous with her famous Vogue song.
Italo Disco was a huge phenomenon but in the US it was never really that popular. I personally think it is one of the best genres in the 1980s along with Hip House (mix of high tempo hip hop & acid house) and of course Rave (now referred to as Hardcore). [Acid House was mainly a London & Leeds scene but it was very popular in Chicago which is the birthplace of House Music.]Wow, you had an awesome time for sure! There was a lot of overlap in time for these genres. Italo Disco was about 1982-1991, Hip House was really just one record label DJ International and was mainly from 1987-1989. Rave was probably the most popular that was from 1989-1993. Rave eventually morphed into Jungle, then Drum 'N Bass and then eventually we got Trance.
Italo Disco did have some influence in the US mainly Laura Branigan. Her song Self Control was a remake of the RAF track which was a popular track in France & Italy in 1983-4.
Probably the song that is the anthem of Italo Disco was Ryan Paris' Dolce Vita (1984).
