Donald Trump speech - the boy who cried wolf

Why all the anger? Trump didn't cheat your candidate Bernie. Hillary and the Clinton machine did.

Well, I probably overreacted. I get exasperated sometimes because you see, the way my mind works, when something is relatively simple like say 1+1 = 2, and people go back and forth discussing it, I wonder WTF you guys do that you have so much free time on your hands to endlessly debate pure and utter shit. I guess it is sport for you. It is not sport for me to discuss what is completely obvious as subjective opinion. No one is changing anyones' mind here in case you didn't notice. I don't think I am so clever that my arguments are going to sway anyone one way or the other. But my own integrity is non-negotiable because my head would explode from chasing my own tail argumentatively endlessly the way you guys do.

Therefore, the reason to post is to clarify ones own thinking to myself (themselves). I try to discover insights that might help me understand the issues better, to come up with future solutions, to dig below the surface and find the true causes of the state of things. The intent is that hopefully someone else can see the torture that I put myself through, and it may make it easier on them to find their path if they are like-minded. If I am lucky, someone will point something that truly educates me, and I am the better for it. I don't always succeed in this honorable goal here or in real life, as I am made of flesh and blood. But GOD knows I try.

I think there is simply dissonance between why people post on P&R and why I do. Most people here aren't interested in truth or making the world a better place for all, but in promoting who they want to service themselves and forwarding some political or religious stance.

The media caught on that giving Trump free publicity was a mistake. They got numbers but they also revealed the fact that an awful lot of people agreed with him.

Now they do not actually report what he says. They filter it and declare it all crazy or dangerous or un-American. Repeated enough times, the gullible public begins to accept it as fact. Their eyes glaze over.

Serious question. How far do we tolerate these lies and slander ?

Trump wants to change libel laws to go after journalists who lie. Why not prosecuting these journalists under libel ?

They have legal protection, going back to a Supreme Court decision in the height of the civil rights era. The NYT had slandered a local police commissioner in Alabama, Bull Conner, and he won a libel case against them. The liberal Warren Court reversed it and implemented the current standard that a "public figure" could prevail only if he could prove actual malice, which is intentional lying or reckless disregard for the truth.

The other problem is that opinions, as opposed to factual matters, are not defamatory. You can sue me for saying you committed a crime but not if I say you are a horrible person.

It's terrible that the media is slandering Trump by repeating exactly what he says. Just terrible. There ought to be law preventing anyone from repeating the stupid things he says.
