i like dogs, but this is 21st century. don't we have an MRI (or an experienced FINGER that does this and better??

Dog more accurate than finger, MRI maybe. But really, which method would you rather experience at the doc's office, Rover having a sniff or the other 2? OK Jimmie, Rover says you're clean, Doc takes latex glove off.
