Plenty of people in third world countries which, by our definition are poor, seem happy leading the simple life. The rest run north to "the promised land"

That being said, money doesn't buy happiness, but as mentioned it can get you alot of options which can lead to freedom if applied correctly. For example, I saved my money made in telecom sales, and now I live off of some of it while I work hard at being a sucessful day trader.

Since you have encouraged me, I'll complete the post which I had stopped because it got (like most of my posts) too long.

Many years ago, I was faced with the (relative) potential for a mega-bucks future. The only problem was, that with all things in life, there would be no assurances. I might be one of the lucky few to succeed massively, but more than not I would become only mildly affluent, not making the grade. The price was high - the sacrifice of all my personal time, life, loved ones, and a large part of my own personal identity and beliefs. The others on the same path with me were miserable wastes of human potential, with failed lives and loves and always saying the same mantra:

"Just one more year. Just one more year and I'll get out."

Of course they never did. (except one) I'm sure when that massive heart attack came to them, it might not have been entirely unwelcome.

Even with that there was no way I was going to make it to that $50 million mark - sorry to tell you this, but unless you are sublimely lucky, that's a multigenerational strategy only.

So, I decided a different course in my life. I'll do satisfactorily, but never compete in the mega-rich category. No NY penthouses, London Flats, Tahitian islands (except on vacation). And I'm OK with that.

But I did keep the girl. :)

Of course money doesn't buy you happiness, but it is still a stupid aphorism because whomever said that had obviously never been poor. Not having enough is a miserable thing to experience. That being said, once your wealth/income hit a certain level your happiness doesn't necessarily increase. Take a miserable person and they will be just as miserable rich. Take a happy person and they will be just as happy rich. I made millions when I was still in my twenties and I got the beach house and the car, etc and it feels like any other house or car to me. I guess I enjoyed the anticipation of getting nice things more than actually getting them. To me now, it is just a house and a car. It feels good to know that you are good at something, but I was just as happy when I was in college and had to work for my beer money, ha!

It's more like, lack of money is the root of all evil, or better yet
the fear of not having enough is the root of all evil.

Money sure does give you the option to buy the tools that can get you to happiness. How you use the tools, is another ball 'o wax.

"money doesn't make you happy"
...the funny thing is that they have money and they are miserable, but the way I see it, money offers:

1. Options
2. respect (somestimes)
3. convenience
4. and Prestige

am i blind to reality or do you agree with me?
