Quote from monistat7:
you need the AC to breathe in NYC. in fact, i think it gets hotter in NYC than in most southern cities due to the congestion of people and skyscrapers. i hardly see how living on beachfront property in miami is considered unsophisticated. if you are making $1MM a year, that $150K in tax savings is more than enough to take dozens of trips to NYC a year to see the opera. if you like museums and musicals over sail boats and scuba diving to the extent that you'd be willing to pay $150K to access that everyday, i guess NYC is the place to be. if taxes weren't a concern, san fran is a great place to live too.
so you visited 48 states but how long have you lived in NYC?
As for AC in NYC, you need it 2 months out of the year not 10 months as is the case in Florida. You could live on the beach on Long Island just as well about 1 hour away from Manhattan.
As for the sophistication part of this equation , there is more to living than a pretty house and a nice view. I like to talk to people who read Harpers magazine on daily basis and not the National Enquirer. Read both publications and you will notice the difference, there are more tha subtle.
By taking dozens of trips to experience the NYC experience would probably cost around 50K extra (Hotels, taxis, first class air fare). however, you also have to include time spent travelling between FL and NYC. On yearly basis, it would easily add to extra 2 weeks of time that equals to another 40K (remember 20k per week equation?). So when you add up 50K + 40K = 90K. Therefore, from the initial 150K you are down to 60K deficit. Hardly a lot when you make 1 million a year. personally, I much rather stay in NYC experience what it has to offer, and it has A LOT going on if you have $$$$$$.
I think that in order to see it my way, you have to stop looking at 150K from your perspective and your income level. it is like trying to explain somebody from Vietnam that spending $40 on a meal in fine restaurant is not a fortune. He will consider it foolish and quickly explain to you that for 20 cents you could eat (in his view) the same dinner. For him eating on a dirty floor with flies all over, on a paper plate with plastic fork would not present a problem. I on the other hand would love to have my meal served on porcelain plate with a decent glass of wine and silver utensils to devour the bird, preferably with a nice piano playing in the background and experience it with people who have travelled extensively, are good conventionalists, and whose interests reach beyond football, or baseball. For that my friend, I need NYC and cannot se myself vegetating in Florida.
