Does everyone have a degree?

When i was in high school i always hated when my teachers told us, "YOU MUST have a degree to get any where in life", because at the time i was a race car driver sponcered by a big time sponcer. I always thought and still think that no matter what education you have, if you have a talent with major dedication, and know how to use it, you can go as far as you want!

Did you know that 25% of college grads earn LESS than the average salary of a high school graduate? And of course, these poor shmucks have to pay their student loans back. Ouch. Insult to injury.

Once upon a time, college taught you how to think. Those critical thinking skills were worthwhile. Nowadays though, college is more about credentialing than informing.

So, it all depends upon your situation.

If mommy and daddy are paying for you, by all means, go to college and do whatever you want. You can figure it out later.

If you are paying for yourself, you'd best make sure that you earn a return on your investment. That means getting the high grades which will get you the plumb job or more likely nowadays, the right graduate school. Otherwise, if you're just there to screw up, why penalize yourself? You can do that while working at Starbuck's.

If you can go to an Ivy league, go. That education is still worth something.

If not, state is fine. You'll be happier in the long run because you won't owe as much for your education.

And finally, why bother at all? Because you will be looked down on for the rest of your life without that degree, and it will deny you jobs. If you really can be a self made person, fine, but once you are out of your early 20's forget about a college degree unless it is from an alternative (and therefore also looked down upon) college.

Don't believe me? Remember Troy in the Apprentice? That's gonna be the attitude you face from anyone with any education behind them. Terrible example, I know, but art does imitate life in this case.

Degrees guarantee nothing. Got my comp sci degree, but
learned 99% of everything on my own anyway.

I think the following is something close to the optimal path.

1) Get your degree in comp sci - but actually learn to code
2) Code trading systems on the side the whole time
3) Take some stats, science, and critical thinking courses
LEARN the scientific method and USE IT to develop trading systems.
4) Graduate, and get a J.O.B. How else are you going to
build your grub stake?
5) Start trading the systems you have been developing all
this time as you build your capital.
6) Once you are making more trading than at your job, QUIT
and go fulltime.

Wish someone told me this years ago :D

the dumbest fuckin thing i did was get an mba. they didnt teach me shit. it cost me $30k. and i taught myself how to trade and how to invest. the mba doesnt doshit, unless you graduate from harvard and get a investment banking job, but that was back in the late 90's.
dont do it! or get a job, and have the employer pay for your mba.

I was at a dinner with some folks. One of the girls leaned back, points to me and two others and says 'you guys went to college'. This is after 20 minutes of conversation. There is no other experience like it; it will have MAJOR ramifications for the rest of your life. Do it and push yourself as hard as you can.
