Do you trust the government: Contact Tracing

Spain to trial coronavirus tracing app on Canary Island

MADRID (Reuters) - Spain will try out a new smartphone app aimed at thwarting the spread of the coronavirus by injecting hundreds of false cases into the system in a test run starting on Friday on the Canary Island of Gomera.

The simulation is part of a system intended to send an alert when one user has been in contact with another who receives a postive diagnosis, the government said.

"The idea is that approximately 3,000 people download it and we will introduce around 300 simulators, beta testers, to mimic a pandemic among 10% of the population," a government spokeswoman said.

It will use Bluetooth short-range radio to log contacts.

To guard against impinging on people's privacy, contact records will be stored on individual devices rather than a central server, using a standard developed by Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Google (NASDAQ:GOOGL).

The trial will start on Friday and continue for two weeks, a period the government hopes will be enough to prove whether the app could be rolled out across the country.

Technology and defence company Indra has been contracted to manage the pilot at a cost of about $375,000.

Gomera is home to about 22,000 residents near the tourist hotspot of Tenerife.

More than 28,000 people have died in the coronavirus pandemic in Spain, but the situation has eased and the country is emerging from a strict lockdown.

The government is anxious to get the tourist industry, a mainstay of the economy, back on its feet and the Canary Islands are a popular destination. They had 2,398 confirmed coronavirus cases out of a national total of 245,268 as of June 18.

Didn't they try an App in the UK for this? It went precisely nowhere.

Didn't they try an App in the UK for this? It went precisely nowhere.
I dunno.
Maybe.
Why'd it "go nowhere" though?
....I mean, its pretty cut and dry in what its trying to accomplish. The code is easy af.
In what regard did it "go nowhere"?

The U.S. doesn't even have a national Contact Tracing app. Most states have not adopted a Contact Tracing app either.

A complete mess.

The Republican nominee for Congress in South Carolina’s first congressional announced on Tuesday evening that she has tested positive for COVID-19.

“Last night, I learned my campaign team was potentially exposed to Coronavirus last week. Out of an abundance of caution and concern for my children and my team, I was tested for COVID-19,” Nancy Mace posted on Twitter.

“Today, my physician administered the Abbott Sars-Cov-2 RNA ID now nasal swab rapid test. “I tested positive for COVID-19 a few minutes later. “I was feeling a little fatigued with a body ache this weekend but that is kind of normal on the campaign trail.”

The announcement came the same day she said she was the first in line to vote in the runoff election.

On June 16th, she posted a video thanking her supporters for her primary win showing dancing, a band — and nobody wearing masks.

NY county subpoenas people who won't talk to contact tracers
Officials said suspected partygoers have hung up on investigators and deny being at the gathering possibly responsible for a cluster of coronavirus infections

Officials in New York are threatening fines and said subpoenas are being issued to a group of partygoers to compel them to speak with health officials about a gathering that could be responsible for a cluster of coronavirus infections.

The party occurred in mid-June, according to media reports, in Clarkstown, N.Y., just north of New York City, where as many as 100 people were exposed to the outbreak.

The host held the party despite exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19, county Health Commissioner Patricia Ruppert said at a Wednesday news conference. At least eight people have been infected and have refused to talk with county investigators.

“My staff has been told that a person does not wish to or have to speak to my disease investigators,” she said. “They hang up. They deny being at the party, even though we have found their names from another party attending or a parent provides us with the information. Many do not answer their cell phones and do not call back.”

“This must stop,” Ruppert added. “Unfortunately, I am now forced by these circumstances to send subpoenas to the individuals who are required to cooperate with us. Failure to comply will be costly — $2,000 per day.”

Rockland County Executive Ed Day said it's "a matter of information" and that "no one is in trouble." He also warned the county is taking the issue seriously.

“I don’t care who you are, who you know, how much money you make, where you live, or anything along those lines,” he said. “If you get in the way of a health department investigation, I will take and we will take every step necessary to ensure that we respond appropriately, and we’re taking a serious response.”

He added that he will not have the "health of our county compromised because of ignorance, stupidity, obstinance, or anything else for that matter."

$2000/day?!!!!
Isn't there something in our Constitution about fair and reasonable punishment?
I hope some of those people at that party are prick-ass lawyers with a chip on their shoulder.

How is it these phone companies can just pony up someone's location data to a county? So any bum-fuck Egypt court-house has the power to do this now? That's bs imo. This whole ability to track a persons every move, past and present.... its bs. Sure, don't use your phone, but they've created a culture now where that's damn near impossible. Whatever. The world needs more pissed-off lawyers, at least ones that are pissed off about the shredding of our rights.

Source?

Here's what I read in the article:

"... They deny being at the party, even though we have found their names from another party attending or a parent provides us with the information. ..."
