i tip based on performance & courtesy........poor service with a negative attitude ,they can kiss my ass.............20% is my standard otherwise.

Most of you are assholes from what I can tell. Are you serious when you say you don't tip? I was a waiter for my first two years of college and the hourly rate was 2.13. Do you know why? Because restaurants have the lowest profit margin of any business. Barely 2 percent. Paying waiters real wages would make them a losing business.

As for the argument that waiters do nothing? That is absolutely ridiculous. Its not just bringing you more coke and taking your order. Who do you think puts the plates together? Who makes your salad? When the restaurant closes at night who stays another two hours to do their side work and roll silverware for the next day. You don't make any extra money for those hours either. Still 2.13/hr. So you know what? Go fuck yourself. Probably never worked a real day in your life. I appreciate trading because I know what it is to really work.

Thank goodness the poll results are more in line with reality than the idiots who contributed to this thread. If you aren't going to tip, go eat at McDonalds. And where the f are you going that you get such bad service? I get great service 90% of the time. What a stupid thread, and what a bunch of cheap bastards.

For some reason I would've expected indifference to tipping on this site but wow. Tipping at Dunkin' Donuts is absurd but not at a restaurant? Why the hell did you go out to eat to begin with? There should be a "Ripley's Believe It Or Not" forum on this site for really unbelieveable threads as this one no doubt belongs there.

I am familiar with what wait staff has to put up with so I routinely give 20%. I am sympathetic to those complaining that it seems like we are expected to give that tip no matter what. In an ideal world tips would be based on service level, but we don’t live in that world. My idea was for a tip-o-meter. Most people are going to tip low or high regardless of the service because that is the type of person they are, and most are too embarrassed or don’t want to take the time to complain. So you place a little meter on the table with a handle you turn from 0 to 20% as the meal progresses so you can tell the employees what you think without having to say it. Not that it would work in real life but it would make them pay more attention.

Quote from Bigpipn:

In ¤ost restaurants the servers must subsidize the busboys' and the bartenders" tip earnings. The servers pay a percentage of the overall sales to the busser and bartender. In essence if the tip is bad enough the server must pay out of his pocket for the patrons to eat there. Blacks are bad but latinos are the worst. They are high maintenance and believe that 10% is a great tip.

Sounds like servers should look into becoming strippers until the restaurant industry implements a sustainable business model.
In any event not my problem. Now where the hell is the fucking salad I ordered 20 minutes ago?
