Do you tell people you're a trader?

Quote from trdr_2000:

I was in an airport waiting for my flight drinking a beer and started talking to this guy next to me and he asked me what I did for a living and I replied "I trade futures"

He turned to me and said "So you're not contributing at all are you?"

Sad but true.
to

"sad but true" I read as trdr_2000 talking.
if i am incorrect you need to learn where to put your quote marks.

"YOu are very defensive and lack self esteem. " from trdr_2000

your response shows that you are lacking in self control plus need to take a course in logic.

This is an interesting question and the "what do you do" question does come up quite often. Yes, people do look down on trading (I'm not sure why?). In my opinion this is the best job in the world. Those ppl have no idea, they're doing their regular 9-5 job and think its something special. I say screw them and screw 9-5.

born to trade

Ah ha - quite the opposite here. Everyone I meet thinks it is the best job in the world. They just can't understand how come I'm doing it.

Everytime this thread comesw up it confuses me. Why wouldn't I tell someone what I do? If I was a whore I'd tell them. Why not a trader? What is to hide? Who cares what the respnse is?

Most people will think you'll fail and that you're an idiot for even trying.

Most traders will fail.

Most people don't like being thought of as a failure (or an idiot).

Hence the defense mechanism. Hopefully that cleared up any "confusion".

(And yes, most businesses fail too, but for some reason people are more willing to give you the benefit of the doubt if you tell them you're starting a business.)

If god has given you a gift and you can handle it, is the point. Its not to puff you up and give you a feeling of a secret supremecy.

I personally am a normal guy with a norml car and home, living my life. I enjoy trading part time and have traded full time in the past.

Peoples perception of what I do, has nothing to do with the smile on my face, but my delight comes with there not having a clue. I am thankful that the Lord has given me the liberty to trade, and I believe that one can be a Christian and trade. I am human and constantly am being tested and the fight with my flesh continues.

I don't need approvel or to feel special or better than others. Everest thanks for clarifying and my smile and comment might have indicated a dead-end path to follow. I don't think anybody should think of themeselves as "better"

Oh I wasn't implying that I am more intelligent - quite the contrary as those who know will readily testify. No, my point was merely that how can I possibly make money being such a git.

So sorry.

No I work for them as an independant contractor...They make me park my car away from their Mercedes...I park in the corner...It's true...

But you just thought you'd mention your work in Beverly Hills anyway, eh?

Quote from spect8or:

Does anyone say they are professional gambler?

Most people will think you are if you answer 'trader' anyway, and they'll think you're 'covering it up' by saying trader.

'Professional gambler' earns you more respect, too -- the words stir up people's romanticized notions about gambling, and they secretly admire someone that has the balls (that they themselves lack) to do it for a living.

(Of course, some people will think you're an idiot, too -- like your fiancee's father.)

Not if you drive a Ferrari Spider.

:p

Tell that to my mom. She thinks its gambling. Personally my defintion of gambling does not include trading (except maybe the one time I had 500 call contracts on a stock :P ) This is an occupation nothing more nothing less.

This is very true. However, I also believe in a path, a reason to why I am here. However, I also believe in that we make our own path to greatness. It is quite an anomaly, but trading and becoming great at trading has nothing to do with my path. I am creating my own path to become a trader, and the measure of greatness comes from the integrity I produce while creating my success....

That's just my two bit's :)
