Do you tell people you're a trader?

This is an interesting question and the "what do you do" question does come up quite often. Yes, people do look down on trading (I'm not sure why?). In my opinion this is the best job in the world. Those ppl have no idea, they're doing their regular 9-5 job and think its something special. I say screw them and screw 9-5.

Hi Thunderdog,

Not sure what else it could suggest other than private with the words Private Trader on it.

My tax accountant got one when I first met him, my real estate agent got one when I first met her, the private ski instructor for my toddler got one when I first met her et cetera...

Just useful to hand out when people ask for your phone number and/or email address instead of carrying around a pen and paper.

Also, the other person can write on the back of my card. I tend to not misplace my cards in comparison to misplace piece of paper with something scrible on it.

Yeah, what a great idea. That way, if anyone ever needs any private trading done, they know to call you. Lol.

I can imagine what they're thinking when you hand it to them...

I was in an airport waiting for my flight drinking a beer and started talking to this guy next to me and he asked me what I did for a living and I replied "I trade futures"

He turned to me and said "So you're not contributing at all are you?"

Sad but true.

You should have started betting with him on flight delays, like Kramer. "You're on cowboy!". Lol.

Does anyone say they are professional gambler?

Most people will think you are if you answer 'trader' anyway, and they'll think you're 'covering it up' by saying trader.

'Professional gambler' earns you more respect, too -- the words stir up people's romanticized notions about gambling, and they secretly admire someone that has the balls (that they themselves lack) to do it for a living.

(Of course, some people will think you're an idiot, too -- like your fiancee's father.)

Or how about 'Private Investigator'?

No, it's got nothing to do with trading. But no one really knows much about what it involves, doesn't need an office, and allows you be understandably secretive about what you're doing (a good PI isn't meant to be seen doing "PI work", so you're covered).

Plus it beats the pants of 'Accountant' in the respect and arousing envy stakes.

Everytime this thread comesw up it confuses me. Why wouldn't I tell someone what I do? If I was a whore I'd tell them. Why not a trader? What is to hide? Who cares what the respnse is?

Oh I wasn't implying that I am more intelligent - quite the contrary as those who know will readily testify. No, my point was merely that how can I possibly make money being such a git.

So sorry.
