Do you tell people you're a trader?

I think I understand the hostility. Come to think of it everyone has some trading experience, whether they’ve bought and sold stocks, bonds, real estate, or mutual funds in their 401k. And if they’ve been burned, they’ll assume that everyone gets burned since….if they can’t do it right, no one can.

i agree with some of you who have said they find it difficult to discuss trading... but thanks for some of the suggestions... some of them were funny =D

The best way to shut people up would be to wear a super-sized gold chain and drive away in a Mercedes S500...I'm years away from that though.

If that's a goal of yours, you can do that today with a little help from MasterCard.

Everyone that knows me knows what I do. But thats where it ends.

I have only had three responses from non-traders.

"Oh  " My favorite because I dress like a beach bum and drive a piece of shit. I can tell when they meet me that they think I am on welfare...but after they get the response to the question they think I am a lunatic/genius. We know that trading is not brain surgery...but they don`t :D

"Isn't that risky" My least favorite response because you know right off the bat that this a generally speaking a negative person. And probably has never done anything entrepreneurial in their life. Working 9-5 for some asshole boss and underpaid.

"Thats great...good luck!" Usually someone in finance.

I'm just curious... what kind of reactions do you receive when you tell someone you're a trader and you do that to make a living...

It seems to me that many people mis-associate trading with the boilerroom, gambling, or just doing something illegal...

Trading is indeed an offshoot of gambling... the goal of the serious trader is to become the house i.e. have a long run positive expectancy... unfortunately, the majority of traders don't manage to buy the casino...
