Quote from BernardRichards:
So we agree that an atheist does not believe that the universe(s) has a creator. There is nothing more that binds atheists together.
You chose to be a humanist because humanism appeals to you for whatever reason. Another atheist may choose to be a sadist because sadism appeals to him. By saying that humanism is logically incompatible with atheism I mean that there is no connection between them -- not that an atheist can not be a humanist at the same time. (My wording was poor mea culpa.)
Atheists are their own god in the sense that they can choose whatever moral code suits them or no moral code at all. Belief that a creator does not exist that prescribes particular moral conduct frees them to do so.
That is correct. Each atheist chooses his own moral code of conduct. (Of course, every theist also chooses their own moral code of conduct by his choice of interpretation of the traditional code that he embraces.) The range of conduct in each of the two groups is the same: you can find evil and great people in both groups.
A belief in a Creator or a non-belief does not determine a persons moral conduct. The question didn't address the issue of 'conduct'; simply whether or not you believe in a 'creator'. I added my personal belief and the source of some of my worldview as an example to spur similar posts.
I can see that I should have separated the 'Poll question' from a statement of my personal beliefs. We've seen no other links from other psoters regarding their beliefs which was one of the goals of this question.
