It's an absolute nightmare for the dems. It undercuts their entire strategy for 2020. In addition to Trump- which admittedly is the biggest issue- the rest of the dem strategy in 2020 is to argue that when it comes to racism and metoo issues, the "republicans shiite stinks, and ours does not." Vote dem if you want to get away from that. Major, major hit on that.
And we dont even know how the Virginia thing will "evolve." We know that one of the three dems will somehow survive but that person will just be Exhibit A of how dems looked the other way as needed.

Virginians now are very similar to Marylanders, ie., a large section of the state is populated by conservative republicans but they are dominated by small but highly populated urban areas. Actually quite similar to the nation as a whole.
The rural/urban conflict is a feature of history back to the Roman Empire. The pattern is generally the same. A gradual increase in urban power at the expense of the rurals until it all breaks down in revolution.
