nobody trades for free (but they do get deeply discounted fees).

Members have caps on the fees charged by the exchange.
however there still are clearing fees (whether they are self-clearing or not - there are NSCC/DTC fees), other ECN fees, SEC fees, bla bla bla.

there are a million fees in a trade. Brokers typically bundle them b/c itemizing would be hell.
so there is no such thing as free. Every line wants to charge u something.
