You gotta look at whom started this thread...someone that wanted to continue the debate for whatever reason with specific naysayers...a few of which have now high tailed out of here and another that's been banned for their crap while others remain here via a different user name.
Don't misunderstand, I'm not blaming the thread starter (londonkid). Instead, the problem lays with those naysayers that continue attempt to misinform people in their belief that banks and institutional firms do not use charts or TA in their trade decisions.
Anyways, the naysayers refuse to acknowledge the
hundreds of online videos of inside trading rooms of many different institutional trading firms where you can clearly see most traders in those trading rooms with charts on their screens along with other screens that contains other information not chart related.
Yeah, everybody knows the institutional traders are not making trade decisions via charts all by themselves. I have not seen one person make such a statement. Charts and TA are just trading tools being used with other trading tools being used by institutional traders. The naysayers try very hard to dismiss the chart use via trying to convince people all those traders around the world have charts for "marketing purposes" only as explained below when they started saying such.
Reposted from another debate...
Take a look at the institutional trader from
Deutsche Bank Hong Kong @ 2:16 time in the video @
The guy in the video is a close family friend. He's been using charts now for almost 7 years now and its not his primary trading tool and its not the only thing he uses but chart analysis helps (confirms) him with his trade decisions.
Check out Jason from
BNP Paribas...he uses more chart analysis than my trading pal above. Jason worked in london but its not normal for me to see a "interest rates structuring" trader using chart analysis @
Now check out the video from AP archives about
Nathalie Pelras of Richelieu Finance (its a brokerage firm and works with with one of the worlds top institutional firms out of Europe)...now go to the 1:03 of the video @
That's a line chart with price moving average crossovers (technical indicators) but not on her screen. Its from the screen of the guy about 4 seats to her right. You get a closer look at one of his favorite chart screens in the video @ 1:54 of the video. If you look closely to his chart...you'll see on the chart a price moving average, trendlines and RSI indicator.
That guy works with one of the top traders in CAC40 futures and charts is just a tool for him and its not the only thing he uses. I've met this guy through a relative that gives an interview in a different one of Richelieu Finance videos.
As a reminder, the naysayers has been misinforming for many years that institutional trading firms do not use charts and do not use TA. After a few years of hearing that nonsense, I posted videos (not the ones above but a different group of videos) of traders at institutional trading firms that contradicts their beliefs. Soon after those videos, the naysayers changed their tune. Instead of saying that firms don't use charts or TA...they started saying that institutional trading firms use charts for
marketing purposes.
Seriously, does it look like the traders in those videos are using charts and TA for
marketing purposes.
Its simple. Some institutional traders use charts or TA...many don't. To say none use them is ignorant, naive and intentionally trying to misinform.
P.S. One of the biggest organization in the world for TA professionals is
The Society of Technical Analysts (STA). You can contact them and ask how many of their members are professional traders at institutional trading firms. Some members contract work with some of the world's top institutional trading firms and hedge funds in which they work directly with the traders and managers.
I first heard about STA many years ago via a trading pal (institutional trader) that works for
Barclays...a multinational banking and financial firm in London, U.K. and he recently landed a job as an institutional trader at
UBS after they fire some folks over the libor scandal.
