Discretionary trading - 3G or 4G latency?

Not sure where to post this thread. Would a mod please move it accordingly as required?

How do you find trading equity futures on a discretionary basis using a 3G or 4G mobile internet connection?

It seems that latency is on the whole quite satisfactory, so long as there're no concurrent downloads of files, even though it jumps to a 4-figure number every now and then (eg, over 1,000 ms).

Fair comment? Any thoughts?

Your views or insight are most welcome.
 
I can't get cable or DSL where I live, so my main internet connection is thru a Verizon Jetpack/mifi. So it's mobile in one sense but I don't trade when I'm away from home. For discretionary trading, I have no complaints. I monitor the connection with DU Meter, and every once in a while the connection drops for a few seconds, but it's hardly ever long enough for Ninja Trader to disconnect (maybe once a month). I have the mifi set to 4G only but I get a good signal. PM me if you have any questions...be glad to help.
 
Only get 3G where I live, didn't notice much of a improvement on 4G to be honest the few times I've been in a 4G area, trades take noticeably longer to open / close / move SL same device connected to Wifi at home.

But needs must, only talking about 1 - 2 seconds tops, if it's moving fast and you want out at a price set a limit order, don't try to exit on an exact price anyway.
 
i use several internet connections (including 3G) and mix them (dispatch) into one connection ,then i use that final connection for connecting to a VPS
 
In France and globaly in Europe the best latency is in 4g (lte) the ping is about 50ms.
When i fallback in 3G the latency grow up to 80ms.
It's still good enough to scalp ... The main problem is to gave a good and fast smartphone ...

Sony Z Ultra and a Ipad Mini 4G here, Z Ultra is just about pocketable if trading on the move.

Another 18months for 4G where I live sadly :(
 
50 ms latency and an additional 1-5 seconds to create and submit orders. Scalping on a phone gives a false sense of security. Sounds more like "playing trader" than actually efficient trading. Swing, position trading is fine, intra-day with wide targets and extended hold time OK. But a fast volatile market will eventually bite you in the ass.

Just wait until you get that inevitable coverage drop, fat finger error, frigging incoming phone call which covers your screen just as you want to push "enter" and you lose your ass on that "scalp" position.

Need to monitor a position, manage or close a trade, Phones are great backups. You want to trade effectively, use the appropriate tools. Anything else is just playing with your D>ck.
 
I had the phone call, just as about to hit exit for +12, canceled, rediverts to 2nd phone, which was off and bounced back, market spiked and by the time I'd sorted it SL hit for -13 LOL

I can trade 100% fine off my 6.4" phone and Ipad mini 8" ish, depends on how you trade I guess, I'm a 10SL aiming to exit in profit on the first stall really, no issues here.

5.2" phone was close and no chance on my 4.3" general use smart phone.

5.2" + glasses was fine, 4.3" with glasses close LOL
