The lack of accentuating the positive in Iraq serves only one purpose...It undermines the world's perception of the United States and our soldiers.

I truly understand the dangerous situation going on outside the wire for the millions of Iraqi people here in Baghdad right now... the never ending car bombings, the mass killings, the kidnappings, the beheadings, the rape-murders, the arsons and the killings of dedicated teachers in front of their horrified students.

Every time this building shakes from the huge concussion of yet another never ending series of car bombs, I can't help but to get even more depressed thinking about the impending devastating news that is about to be delivered to the families of the newest casualties of this war. What is even more depressing is the fact that they just died because of selfishness and greed.

This is something that every one of us needs to think about if and when we come skipping and dancing out of the bank after cashing in our Dinar for a tremendous profit... the price has been paid by many... and it was extremely high.

Please remember your brave American and Coalition Brothers and Sisters (including the tens of thousands of Contractors) now by bowing your head and saying a small prayer for the many hero's who have died or been witness to horrible memories that they will carry for all of their life in the name of freedom for the Iraqi and Afghan People.

Settle down, francis. My skepticism in buying a worthless currency does not mean I have no respect for the soldiers in Iraq. Not sure if that was the parallel you were going for, but puhlease.

And we can add a DID YOU KNOW about how many people die daily, have died, and will die today statistics too.
 
this thread got me pretty interested in the dinar. i saw all those "scam" sites and affiliates trying to make money buy "mailing money" or whatever. not a bad idea for a quick buck on their part, but i wouldnt do it.

BUT, what i am interested in, if anyone knows if this is possible, IS opening a bank account in iraq (perhaps hard enough without a local address) and dropping a few thousand US in there and getting interest. now excuse me for my lack of understanding iraqs infrastructure, but if now now, then they should soon have credit infrastructure in place, like visa, mastercard, etc.

So, this would allow me to keep my dinar in an iraqi bank and not have to worry with holding actual notes and somehow cashing them in down the road, i could gain interest, AND use a debit card attached to the bank account, getting decent interest. So in effect i would have my money available to me WHILE i am taking a huge gamble with a 100% loss potential, but much higher gain potential, which i could easily throw a few thousand dollars at (not to mention the cool debit card from an iraqi bank as a conversation starter) Ok, where do i sign up?

if anyone knows how to get an iraqi bank account, let me know!
 
I have not bought any dinars as of yet but I would not be so quick to exclude doing it unless I was one of those type of investors that likes to stick to conservative deals like T-bills and government bonds.

Risk vs reward has and always will be the name of the game.

I posted because I am rather intrigued by some of the comments on this thread that say the Dinar is "worthless"
Does that also mean it will always stay "worthless"?

I dont know, but I always thought the name of the game was buy low, sell high.
or the short version which is sell high, buy low.

i.e. I figure should buy a currency when it is relatively worthless in hopes of it gaining some worth. right? but "if and only if: there are conditions in place that allow it a good chance to make a rebound. right?

You may not buy the low priced stock of a recently bankrupt company unless you had faith in the current management to get the company back on its feet. Some people generate tremendous profits doing such things. Bottom feeders (I think they call them)

Not much different is a speculative investment in the emerging new currency of a developing country. It is a highly risky proposition but its is none the less what makes such an investment so attractive to those investors with a higher appetite for risk. Sure there is alot the turmoil and uncertainty in Iraq but thats exactly whats makes it so speculative and potentially rewarding.

I figure investing a few dollars in a country that has the second largest oil reserves in the world and developing infrastructure thats being overseen by the US government and government officials that have a vested intrest in seeing Iraq succeed cant be too bad of an investment (as far as high risk investments go)

Just be prudent and sensible and dont invest your life savings into it! Iraq is a long term investment. If I do this I figure I wont see a return on it for maybe 10 -15 years.
The dinar was trading at about 1470 in Nov 1 2006 and now in Jan 28 of 2007 its about 1292. This translates to a 13.77% return for 88 days which is annualized return of over 57%.

Not too bad of a return for worthless currency? ehhhh
