Digital camera issues

Quote from Tums:

does this happen when you plug other USB device into the port?
e,g printer?

maybe the port is fried.

It works fine with the printer.

then the next thing to do is... take your camera to a friend and see if it crashes your friends computer. ;-)

I've seen this with desktop computers and has typically been due to a faulty/floating ground. When you plug in the USB connector it shorts against the case and this reboots the system. (Laptops don't usually have this problem as they typically have plastic surrounding the USB ports.) I've typically seen this with the USB ports on the front of machines so you can try by carefully plugging into the USB ports on the back of the machine, the ports attached directly to the motherboard. Or better, use a USB extender cable to plug in the back of the motherboard and then, assuming no problems, carefully plug in the camera into the extender cable so as not to wiggle the computer side.

Believe it or not, I had this happen with a laptop. It had 4 USB ports, and the one on the back left was the culprit. Every time I forgot about it and tried to plug something in, bam it rebooted. I finally had to put a piece of black electrical tape over it to keep me from doing it.

I tried the camera in my wife's laptop and it works fine. I tried calling HP to see if they can help, but since the 1 year warranty has expired for my pc, they charge $60 for tech support to try to help resolve the issue. They won't charge you if they can't fix it.

Keep in mind that my computer does not go back to the desktop page until I unplug the above items.

What screen or message are you getting?

Try pluging in the card reader with no media card in it.

Several card readers require specific drivers.

It almost sounds like your computer is trying to load drivers.

Check your device manager and your usb controllers.

I did plug the card reader without the media card in it and it still reboots.
