ROE is obviously a much better metric and much more justifiable.

ROE commingles leverage, actual return, and turnover.

return on margin is meaningless as margin keep changing.

I use:
return on gross capital invested (longs plus shorts)
Return on notional for my options strategies
Annualized return on notional for my event driven stuff
