Despite shitty economy, unemployed Americans refuse to take farm jobs

Quote from Vinny1:

Many people are lazy in America. My friend's girlfriend in NJ hasn't worked for close to 2 years (was laid off from her last job) and has been collecting $1,900 per month in unemployment. She makes more on unemployment than many people working full-time. She doesn't even have a college degree, just a high school diploma. What incentive is there to look for work when you can just sit back, do nothing, and collect $1,900 per month in unemployment. Of course, she says that she has been looking for work, but can't find anything. She is probably only applying to 1 job per month. Her unemployment is done with in 2 months, which will make it 99 weeks. Does anyone know if the government has extended unemployment to more than 99 weeks?

How is that lazy? Who would turn down getting paid more for not working that earning less going to work and of course I am not including the cost of gasoline etc..

She does not sound too different from a trader. All she is doing is taking advantage of an arbitrage situation. Only a fool would turn down a good risk free arb.

Come November, her unemployment will stop, and with 2 years of being unemployed, not many companies will hire her. She lives on her own in an apartment and has only $4k in the bank, which she will use up in 2 months, and then be flat broke with no unemployment benefits. What happens then? If she gets welfare and food stamps, she most likely won't be able to stay in her nice rented 2 bedroom condo. I guess she will have to get used to living in a dump. I'm sure many people in this country are in the same boat though...unemployment runs out, no savings, no job to be found, pretty scary.

Tier 5 is coming

On August 4, 2010, Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) introduced the Americans Want to Work Act. This legislation would create an additional tier (Tier 5) of unemployment benefits for those (known as the 99ers) who have exhausted their unemployment insurance benefits. The bill is cosponsored by Senators Charles Schumer (D-NY), Harry Reid (D-NV), Dick Durbin (D-IL), Carl Levin (D-MI), Bob Casey (D-PA), Chris Dodd (D-CT), Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Jack Reed (D-RI), and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI).

If passed The Americans Want to Work Act will provide 20 additional weeks of unemployment insurance for individuals in states with an unemployment rate of 7.5% or higher. This new Tier 5 would benefit people who have exhausted their weeks of all available benefits. In high unemployment states such as Massachusetts the limit is 99 weeks. In order to receive this tier, individuals would still need to meet regular unemployment insurance law requirements.

:D

If passed, what happens after 20 weeks? If someone hasn't found a job in 99 weeks, they probably won't find one in 20 additional weeks. I guess all they can do is keep trying to extend unemployment benefits forever.

They have become the political party of the disenfranchised. These type of measures are nothing more than voter bribery. "Unless you vote for us, your food stamps, unemployment, section 8, free healthcare, etc, etc...will be revoked".

I have friends that previously voted with this same mentality, but now realize things aren't getting better they are worse off.

So real change is required. I am talking to them about why they should vote Libertarian and if they are in Colorado vote Tancredo American Constitution Party.

This is outrageous. Who the fuck is going to pick the grapes for my 2010 Pinot Noirs? My cellar will suffer. Something needs to be done about this.

Quote from Scataphagos:

To collect unemployment benefits, don't you have to be actively looking for a job? Contact a minimum of 10 potential employers per week, or something?

Are we to believe all the "99ers" have each contacted 9,900 potential employers and still come up dry?

Been years since I collected UE but it went like this: You had to answer a few questions on- line each week to remain qualified.

Ex

Did you look for work? Yes or no?

Did you refuse a job offer? Yes or no?

Are you able to work? Yes or No?

Are you telling the truth? Yes or No?

Has your address changed? Yes or No?

That was about it.

Quote from peilthetraveler:

In California unemployment pays $450 per week. If you break that down hourly over 40 hours, it comes to $11.25 per hour. So what sounds better...$10 bucks per hour to be out in 90 degree heat doing manual labor or $11.25 per hour sitting at your air conditioned home watching Oprah, football, facebooking or even wasting time on elitetrader?

Unemployed in Cali..the new american dream :D
