DeSantis said that school districts are free to enact mandates but that they can't receive state funds if they do. He is not dictating what the schools do he is using what legal leverage he has to encourage compliance with state guidance.

And after the federal government stated they would pay the school officials -- DeSantis now has moved on threatening to fire them if they enact mask mandates.
As has been pointed out -- the leverage he is trying to use (in both denying state funds and attempting to fire school officials) is illegal under Florida state law.
So he cannot tell them what to do but he can illegally withhold funds if they don't do what he tells them to do..

Its not really that circular. The school districts are absolutely free to do as they please but they cannot expect funding when they are in defiant noncompliance with their funding source.
Only the Florida legislature can withhold funding from schools. The funding was approved via the budget and must be distributed. The governor cannot withhold the funds unless the legislature votes to do so.
Governor has no right to withold funds already appointed by the body with the actual power to give money... the legislature. Just because you want the governor to use the money to control beliefs and policies does not make it right.
If your kid does not like the policy, home school or private school are viable options.
School board makes its decisions through its elected body in conjunction with the Superintendent.

I see no sign of anything but traffic, packed restaurants etc. I went to the hospital for my yearly stress test (doc said "you're in good shape".. I said "try mowing my lawn in August") and didn't see any dead persons in the waiting room. The staff, however, was wearing masks again.
