Florida continues to be a coronavirus clusterf--k, due in large part to Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis apparently following the we can't close the beaches, it's prime tourist season school of governance. His latest move, however, is so bizarre that it has other state leaders wondering if he did it by accident.

For reasons apparent to nobody, DeSantis vetoed the entire near-$30-million budget of the state online education systems being used by Florida students to complete online high school and college courses. The Complete Florida Plus Program will cease to exist as of midnight tonight, and the site will be shut down.

As Politico reports, DeSantis' veto came out of nowhere, "leading some higher education officials to wonder if there had been some sort of mistake." Did DeSantis intend to scuttle the state's entire online learning program in the middle of a pandemic now spiraling out of control in his state?

From the refusals of anyone around DeSantis to provide an explanation, it doesn't seem to be an error. DeSantis just wants to end the state's distance learning program, which will be shut down at midnight. Because DeSantis wants it to be … during a pandemic. A pandemic that makes distance learning the only practical means of continuing an education, as DeSantis' previous bungles send Florida COVID-19 cases spiraling.

With, so far, no explanation or recourse.

As usual, there is more to the story. But if we could, lets keep this to the virus discussion? I know you hate DeSantis. Maybe you can start your "Elect (competitor) to Florida Governor" once it comes out who is running against him? I might even vote if the person is good.

The veto also will scrap a database of online courses and an online library service.

More than 2,000 adult students could lose their scholarships, and roughly 150 employees in Tallahassee, Gainesville and Pensacola could lose their jobs, according to Politico.

Complete Florida will go offline at midnight without any new sources of funding, meaning that library databases, among other tools, would become unavailable in the middle of the college summer semester.

It provides DeSantis's comments (your article did not) and it also mentions this point - which you seemed to omit.

The State University System of Florida defended the move, saying it is working to collaborate with other bodies to implement new programs.

but again, this is a virus related thread. I know you hate DeSantis and Trump. We got it. We're not in doubt on those subjects. You can let it go now, confident your point is made. I'll continue to report Florida Covid numbers in here, and DeSantis' decisions in that arena is still showing to be working, as Florida is mostly back to work.

Including abruptly cutting off the education of people in his state overnight. It would be understandable if the program was phased out over weeks allowing people to complete courses and then a new program was available for them to transition to. But that is not the case.

The OP is about how DeSantis's commentary regarding the virus was on target, and the speech in the OP is entirely about the conversation with the Press regarding the virus. Furthermore, every single page of this thread is about the virus and not one time anywhere did I support DeSantis in any stance outside of his stance with the virus.

So these students had to take online courses due to their schools being shut down by COVID-19. Tell me again why immediately cutting off the funding for this COVID-19 related problem is not on topic.

While % positive continues to increase with latest weekly data, total number of tests saw a massive jump. Case count is higher from more testing AND from more positives. But testing is certainly playing a part.

You people are so focused only on death....people who get it can be hospitalized and havce permanent lung scarring or a shitty couple of weeks.

If we all went out together with no protections/social distancing and had summer camps and full flights and and packed bars/restaurants, the virus would spread quickly and to a large number of people leading to serious hospitalizations and yes, deaths that could have been prevented.

Considering that 20.9% of the population of Florida is over 65 -- while only 15.2% of the U.S. population is over 65. Florida is a state that is very much at risk for many deaths once the current outbreaks inevitably start moving beyond the younger population
