DeSantis for the win

If DeCuntis and his team were smart he would sit 2024 out.

This is not entirely true....

The proposed legislation would rename Reedy Creek as the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District but states that the new entity will maintain the old one's debt obligations in outstanding bonds—more than $1.1 billion—and its ability to collect taxes from the area it oversees.

Originally DeSantis proposed to eliminate it entirely but backed down when he realized the bond issues would put local counties on the hook to foot the bill. (April 2022 "After trying to dissolve Disney’s special taxing district last year, Republican lawmakers on Monday released a new plan: Rename the district and let Gov. Ron DeSantis choose the people in charge.")(" Less than 11 months before the Reedy Creek Improvement District is scheduled to be abolished, there are still no announced plans to replace any of the governmental services the special taxing district currently provides to the Walt Disney World resort property.")

This was discussed when it was first proposed. So it was a valid concern when DeSantis first announced it but it was changed over time until it got to this iteration which was simply having hte power to appoint its own members.

Disney always exceeded any FL building codes so Disney's exemption of building codes does not achieve anything except a media victory. You think Disney is cutting corners in how it builds hotels and buildings on property?

Conservatives know he had to back down: Alex Bruesewitz, a conservative political strategist, wrote: "So Desantis' big stand against woke Disney amounts to: changing the name of Reedy Creek & DeSantis gets to appoint some of his donors to the board? But Disney gets to keep its nearly tax-free, regulation-free status."

DeSantis said he was opposed to Disney appointing people beholden to Disney yet DeSantis appointed :
The most prominent name DeSantis appointed Monday to the board of the district, which the new law renames the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District, is Bridget Ziegler, a conservative education activist who was a major backer of the “Don’t Say Gay” bill. She is also a DeSantis-endorsed Sarasota County School Board member and co-founder of “Mom’s for Liberty,” a group that helps train and recruit conservatives to run for school boards. Her husband, Christian, was recently elected chair of the Republican Party of Florida.

Have to look at this with eyes wide open. deSantis renamed the District and put his donors on the board. Other than that....nothing of substance really changes as far as Disney is concenred since they still collect taxes to pay for all the services they provide to the District and are responsible for the bonds. All reedy creek controls is services the government is usually in charge of but often fucks up. Thankfully he simply is rewarding donors with a cushy job and position.

I'm sorry, what - specifically - in the article I posted is "not true"?

As for "looking at it with open eyes", all I said specifically was that GWB told us that the state's taxpayers would be on the hook for the debt. Or are you trying to claim that they are?

When this was originally announced by DeSantis he wanted to abolish the District all together and there was pushback because it would leave the taxpayers footing the bill. I dont know if GWB said it then and then changed his tune or continued to say it even now and is wrong.

But desantis and the GOP realized they could not abolish it because of the taxpayer liability so they backtracked after last summer into the soft version of today. My comment was that Ron spoke to soon and when he realizsed taxpayers would be on the hook the FL senate fixed it for him :).

At the earlier time, I outlined that DeSantis wanted eliminate the district which would leave the local governments (i.e. the taxpayers) on the hook for unfunded liabilities well over $1 Billion. As well as making the banks involved in the Disney debt and Florida local government debt very perturbed. This can easily be seen in reviewing my earlier posts on this subject.

Ron DeSantis is now trying to claim that keeping the existing Reedy Creek district and merely having DeSantis directly appoint his own right-wing candidates as board members was a huge "win" in taking on "woke" Disney. It should also be noted that none of DeSantis' board appointees have any appropriate experience in operating and oversight of a large local government where the focus is on trash service, roads, water, and other issues rather than right-wing political narrative.

GWB said the taxpayers would be on the hook and as usual, GWB was wrong. What I told him back then was that we needed to wait and see, and there was no way that Ron would move forward or the legislature would make that happen if the taxpayers were going to get hit with the bill.

At the end of the day, it was Disney who started this when the then CEO stated he would work to overturn the wrongly named "Don't Say Gay" bill, and in so doing, picked a fight with the DeSantis administration that they - to this day - regret doing.

So everyone can say whatever they want, but Disney regrets it. The lesson was learned. FAFO.

Disney regrets it according to your political bias.... but if you look closely..nothing changed except desantis gets to put his political allies on the District board.... other than that Disney gets to operate as usual running their parks and hotels like they always did. Why? Because Disney is the largest tax revenue generator in the state and even Ronnie is not stupid enough to kill the golden calf...

What exactly does the billon dollar global empire regret haha....

The district is in charge of services like fire, police, utilities which Disney collects taxes to pay for. Ron put his choices to oversee it but they are not going to do anything to mess up how things are run. Also Disney is still delivering those services and collecting taxes.

Ron only achieved one thing, he changed the name from Reedy Creek to Orlando something.

According to an analysis conducted on behalf of the Florida House State Affairs Committee, "the bill maintains the current tax-exempt status of property of the district and bonds issued by the district."

Disney should say we are shutting down until desantis is out of office and the law is reversed.Costly, but Disney has the money and its worth it.

Guys, the moment Donald Trump call Ron DeSantis “meatball” on a debate stage in front of all of America it’s over for him. Just saying.

While Disney still retains plenty of privileges in the state, DeSantis claimed victory at the bill-signing (which, by pure coincidence, took place on the eve of his book launch, a memoir billed as “a firsthand account from the blue-collar boy who grew up to take on Disney and Dr. Fauci”).
