DeSantis for the win

T, its easy for all of us to look back and say this is what he should have done, kinda like the stock market lol. The reason I think he dropped the ball is he was hell bent in opening, had total disregard for the severity of the situation and didn't err in the side of caution. Trying to suck up to Trump didn't help as Trump led him down the wrong path. That's all. That's pretty much all that is required to drop the ball and lose the WAR.

Hell, when this started I was in his camp, it's just a flu, it will be over soon etc. but i shifted and hit the bid on that right away. He kept the stock until it hit zero bid. :D

Still feel the same?

Ok, I'm done for today. There's only so much fun a guy can have.

The amount of staff vaccinated is not a problem from where I stand. That's their choice.

So they live in a community where the outbreak level is red and are free to bring COVID into the nursing home to cause breakthrough cases among the at-risk elderly population. Hard to believe why you don't see this as a problem -- certainly the medical community does.

Obviously not all of the medical community does. Because retirement home caregivers are part of the medical community. And both the staff and the companies that run the homes aren't changing it, are they.

Speaking of the medical community, we keep hearing about the "cataclysmic" numbers in Florida hospitals (just like we did last year). Words/phrases like "warzone" and "people turned away" and "corpse trucks" (all bullshit, of course) were/are thrown around to elicit an emotional response.

You're meant to read the emotional articles and come away outraged and scared (because that's what keeps you coming back and clicking, driving revenue for them). The Covid cultists like GWB then latch on to this hook, line and sinker and run with it, shouting to anyone who will listen (and most who don't want to) about the end of times.

From HHS, total hospital occupancy data.

Enter any hospital or any geographical area and you'll get a result. At first glance, you will note that many states appear in the 70% or more Inpatient Beds Occupied category. The news media (and the COVID cultists) will tell you that this is because it is a WARZONE. No, not really.

Hospitals run a for-profit model. Its a bit warped, but think of it as you would a hotel. A hotel that runs a large amount of rooms empty for a long time doesn't stay in business for long. So it is with hospitals. They make money on treating patients. Hospitals, in general aren't not-for-profit, they are for-profit. Which means elective surgery (think hip replacement or removing kidney stones, etc) take up a good portion of the beds. If you google "examples of elective surgery" you will be surprised what is considered "elective". I was.

These are all the procedures that were frozen when COVID first surfaced, and why we saw all those videos and pictures of hospital staff in empty hallways. The staff that handled these procedures were furloughed and many lost their jobs. The ones that handled ICU patients were a different story.

So don't get all crazy when you see hospitals at 70%+ capacity. That's the model in which they operate. They want to be 90-95%.

I'd like to thank GWB for giving me this idea. A stroll down yesteryear of all the hyperbole and ridiculous statements posted on this very thread about how last summer was going to end all life in Florida as we knew it, and how - at the end of the day - it was all wrong, overblown, overhyped and hysteria. Just like I said back then.

Why is this important? Because this time is different, right?

From GWB on June 26:

Florida adds another 8,942 new COVID-19 cases, breaking single-day record again
Friday's report of nearly 9,000 new cases caps weeks of record-high jumps with 8,942 being the highest ever.

Oh noes!

This chart looks a little stale now that a whole bunch of other states also had jumps, some much larger, only a few months later. Why? DeSantis of course!

El Ocho told me this when I mentioned 28 states had a higher death rate per 1M pop than Florida last summer:

Today FL has a better rate than 25 states. So in his defense, it did get a tad worse :)

GWB on june 27:

I love the article shrieking words like "shattering" in there. Of course months later, some states shattered Florida's numbers, but whocouldanode??

Can we get an update to the above?

More coming...

Let's see where Florida is now -- reaching new high levels in COVID cases. Not only much higher than other states in the Northeast during the recent winter -- but double the peak cases in Florida last summer.

So much "winning" by DeSantis. You would think that DeSantis would have learned last summer the importance of applying proper public health practices to reduce death and misery across the state.

Florida COVID update for Wednesday: 16,038 new cases, highest reported since January

The real question is ICU capacity. Because COVID patients are placed in ICU units, not in standard beds. Florida is not doing well currently in ICU capacity as many hospital systems are reporting being overrun with COVID ICU hospitalizations and running out of ICU capacity.

Of course, DeSantis is no longer allowing the State of Florida to report ICU occupancy data since it makes him look bad. However other sources have compiled the information (provided below).

"In Central Florida, a check of the larger hospitals shows that Orlando Regional Medical Center is at 97% capacity, and Advent Health Orlando was at 93% capacity"

Did DeSantis cause the cases in the Northeast during the recent winter, too?

Are these links to articles from last summer? I think I saw you post them last summer. Or maybe its the exact same headlines, only this year?

We're all gonna diee!!!!!!!

This was a good link, though - thanks: How Full Are Hospital I.C.U.s Near You?

Shows hospitals all over the country in a similar position. But DeSantis did all that, too, right?
