Denmark

P.S. - we're broke and have a large budget deficit which we have no clue on how to fund in order to continuing welfare services.

But right now, we're happy! Who cares about the future?

I too am wondering how much of some of the Nordic countries apparent wealth is due to being oil rich. I think only Norway is oil rich though.

The entire world has gone from long term thinking to short term profits.

This very same argument is the point that Human Forced Global Warming whistle blowers have been trying to make. Oil/Coal and the fossil fuels are cheap short term, but will be catastrophically expensive long term.

I don't know what the answer is to the Social Contract (although I believe the Singularity is the answer there). But the solution to HFGW is pretty clear.

whatever, comparing these small countries to USA is like comparing what's going on in Nebraska or Connecticut to USA. And for that matter, comparing a small country like USA to India or China is also silly. Can you even imagine the mess we would be in now if we had a billion people?

This has been discussed endlessly here. Socialism can work for a time if you don't have a massive underclass like we do, and if you don't have open borders, which we effectively do have. It also helps if, like the Nordic countries and the rest of Europe, you let the US pay the tab for your national defense.

Eventually however, Margaret Thatcher's observation will catch up with you. You run out of other people's money to spend.

that's why you need globalization. so you can follow the money around like hot potato. It never runs out, but it sure does get passed around
