Senator Johnson Underwent Brain Surgery Overnight (Update1)

Dec. 14 (Bloomberg) -- Senator Tim Johnson underwent brain surgery overnight at the George Washington University Hospital in Washington, leaving him in critical condition, said an aide to the lawmaker who wished to remain anonymous.

Johnson, 59, a Democrat from South Dakota, was taken by ambulance to George Washington Hospital in Washington yesterday afternoon after becoming disoriented during a conference call with reporters. His office issued a statement saying he had had a ``possible stroke.''

Control of the new U.S. Senate may now depend on Johnson's health after the Democrats won a 51-49 majority in the Nov. 7 midterm elections. If Johnson's seat were to become vacant, South Dakota Governor Mike Rounds, a Republican, may appoint a Republican replacement.

That would shift the partisan balance to 50-50 and give Republicans control through the tie-breaking vote of Vice President Dick Cheney.

Further details on Johnson's condition are expected later this morning, the aide said.

I'm sure this situation has arisen in the past, but I cannot recall how it was handled. I can see a fairly strong argument for ZZZ's position, namely that the governor should appoint a respected member of the party which held the seat, but it is certainly not a legal requirement. In the current super-heated partisanship, I think it is unlikely.
 
If the Republicans get a reprive, do they clean up their act, or is it more of the "screw you, we have the reigns"?

If the Dems go down, do they cry foul? Do they prop this guy up like Bernie and drag him to the Senate with IV in hand?

It really is quite a turn of events, but knowing how these criminals work, they are behind the scenes hoping for a particular outcome, relegating Johnson to an aside.

I'll bet there are a bunch of SEC commissioners hoping he makes it. They are going to be a lot better off with Leahy over Specter.

The SD Governor was elected as a Republican and as such part of his duties is to appoint a replacement Senator if that becomes necessary. If the people had wanted him to appoint a Dim then they should have have elected a Dim for Governor. In effect he was elected to make Rep appointments.

It has happened, the senator simply never showed up during his entire term. Apparently the senator has to relinquish his position before the governor makes an appointment.
 
Be kind of funny to watch the folks who thought a senator changing parties right after the election was just grand, suddenly tell us that a governor appointing someone from the other party is underhanded.
