Take a look at www.electoral-vote.com to get a visual count of how this works out. (you have to click on the general election link) It is updated every day with the release of new polls for each state. It is non partisan. Shows Mac well ahead, and many of the polls were before the Wright thing.
Bingo. Very uphill climb for Obama. McCain just needs to avoid mistakes to win.
There is another factor here that people are not focusing on. Hillary's supporters and the Clinton machine are history if Obama is elected. If Obama loses, Hillary would be young enough for another try in 2012. She and her supporters have every incentive to stay in the race and do everything possible to weaken Obama, short of appearing disloyal. There is no way Gore gets in the race this year, but he is no doubt making the same calculation.
