No it's not! I lived in San Diego 94-96. While the beaches were nice, the water was cold and the sand was crappy. Here in Clearwater, FL, the beaches are drop dead gorgeous. White sand, warm water...

Now if you want surfing and waves, then there are none in the gulf, so that's out. But as far as pristine beaches go, you're smoking some good california weed if you think any Socal beaches outpace Clearwater or other west coast florida beaches (Destin also comes to mind).

Florida beaches have nice white sand and pleasant warm water. I also love that the beach is flatter and you can run down near the water where the sand is compacted.

I once ran from Cocoa Beach to Patrick AFB and back at night on the beach. The gulf beaches are gorgeous.
