Democracies risk 'losing souls' as media freedom erodes, group says

There is a certain decorum in politics: you don't go after politician's underage kids and you don't go after families who have made grave sacrifices for this nation.

Was just about to ask the question AAA posed. Your distaste for poor political discourse is admirable. Would be even more so were it equally applied.

In general of course this is true, but you forfeit that protection when you enter the political arena and use a national platform to launch a vicious personal attack against someone who has done nothing to you.

And why doesn't this same "rule" apply to the Benghazi families? Why does Hillary get a free pass for suggesting they were delusional or mentally incompetent?

I wouldn't call kahns speech a vicious attack. He was using his free speech as a private citizen. Trump of course has the freedom to speculate that Kahn is a misogamist because his wife didn't speak. But trump is running for president of the USA and that was a boorish thing to do.

I'm not that informed on the Benghazi situation but as you describe it, it is inappropriate.

The argument that "she did it first" is not a mature one.

No, it's not. Reminds me of all the folks that supported Obama actions with the catch phrase of "Bush was worse". As if that justified doing it again.

I think AAA's point, which was the same as my own, calls a particular brand of hypocrisy when certain posters point out failings of Trump but ignore the same exact issues on the other side of the aisle. As posters go, you remind me of this.

Both sides use this same argument. That's how the whole Benghazi comment came up.

Absent of whatever Hillary did or Obama or Bush 1 or Bush 2, is attacking the character of Kahn acceptable or not? Is it acceptable to attack the wife of that navy seal who was killed in Yemen?

It's not acceptable at all. But then I have no problem with calling out either the right or the left for poor behavior. All I'm asking is that you do the same.

I didn't absolve Hillary of the same behavior. I didn't even comment on it until someone else mentioned it and assumed I thought that was okay.

They probably made the mistake because of your posts on this forum. You strike me as someone who is quite intelligent and thoughtful. But the fact is that you aren't very balanced in your criticism. Or maybe you are and you just come here to slam Trump.

I don't think Republicans are bad. I don't like Republican social policies but I like their (classic) fiscal poliicies. I voted for many in my relatively short voting career though I tend to skew liberal.

I think Trump is bad for America. He's not a republican or a democrat. He's something sinister and cheap. He relies on lies and manipulation to get what he wants; and no one exactly knows what he wants. We don't know what his goals are, but it's unlikely to Make America Great Again. Hopefully millions won't die and trillions of value won't be lost as he gets it.

I also don't follow the Republican social platforms, but instead like what conservatives push for fiscal policy (note I did not use Republican but "Conservative" because Republicans haven't been conservative fiscally for a while).

No argument on much of this. But much of it isn't new. It's just obvious to you now because the media, like you and I, doesn't like Trump and has, as a result, started reporting negativity on a sitting President again. That is the problem I have here. Much of the last 8 years were crap that - should Trump have been the one to do it - would have been front page news but instead was buried.

Agreed.

I know the media wasn't too hard on Obama. I don't know if that's a liberal slanted bias (most journalists go to liberal arts school and probably lean left) or if its because he was actually really good at being Presidential (in a surreptitious way) and so it was hard to pin him down on stupid things. Trump does a lot of stupid things: even yesterday he walked out on an interview because CBS kept following up on his unsubstantiated wire tapping claims. CBS was doing the right thing journalistically but it made Trump look stupid.

Trump also gets away with a lot by the media that no one else can get away with. He casually said someone should shoot Hillary to show her what gun control is!

However, I think Trump brings most of it on himself. He may even want it because it helps him manipulate the media outlets. In a small way, Marketsurfer does that here. And everyone knows his name, and while most of us consider him a buffoon, it is probably benefiting him professionally.
